Defination of Noun


A noun is a word that stands for a name of a person,animal,place,thing or an abstract idea.

Kinds of nouns


Common nouns are names which are general in nature, not specific or unique names e.g. This is a pen. In this sententence pen is a Common noun.
Some more examples for Common nouns are Table,chair,pencil,computer,etc….

Proper nouns are name to a particular person, animal, place or thing e.g. My name is Bhakti. In this sentence Bhakti is a Proper noun, As it states the perticular name of person. Some more examples for Proper nouns are Himalaya,India,Mahabharata,etc….

Collective nouns: are names of collections. They are not the names of the individuals in a collection e.g. There is a bunch of keys on the wall. Here ‘bunch' is a Collective noun. Some more examples for Collective nouns are union, federation, crowd, orchestra etc.

Abstract nouns When a noun denotes of something we can niether see or touch but only think is called an Abstract nouns e.g. Honesty is the best policy. Honesty is an Abstract noun.

Countable nouns are names of people, places, things that we can count e.g. I have three pens here, noun is pens as we can count it. Countable nouns can be have a singular and plural form e.g A book ,two books,three books.

Uncountable nouns are names of uncountable things, we can not make them plural by adding -s, because they only have a singular form e.g. Water, Work. We can make some uncountable noun countable by putting a countable expression in front of them e.g. 2 glasses of water

Possessive nouns are used to show ownership e.g. The dog's kennels
