Bedwetting problem: How to deal with bed wetting

Nocturnal Enuresis or bed wetting is generally related to urine especially at night, that too while sleeping. This is a common in the toddlers as they have not learned to control their flow. There are about 15 million children in India affected with this problem. This is a common problem in boys.

Bed wetting is while the kids urinate in bed while they are asleep and it is embarrassing. The kids are not aware wetting the bed and sometimes they come to know by the cold effect which the wet bed gives after the discharge. Types of bed wetting

Primary Nocturnal Enuresis: It is termed when the child has no control over his bladder in the night

Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis: This term is used when the child wets bed occasionally which is also considered as accidental bed-wetting after having had bladder control for 6 months or more.

Causes of bed wetting

Researchers and scientists have been studying this phenomenon for a long time. Lot of reasoning has been done about this. Here we should first get to know as to what are the reasons that lead to bed wetting or nocturnal enuresis. Keep a keen eye on your child's activities:
Is your child going down in grades?
Is your child breaking the toys?
Is your child neglecting others?
Is your child lonely all along the day?

Is your child losing appetite?
Is your child feeling tired?

Is your child losing control on the bladder in the day time?
Is your child having easy access to the washroom?

The other reason to bed wetting can be the neurological developments that are the major causes. The brain of the child learns the perfection functioning and the child learns the indications only after attaining a proper age.

Sensitivity in a kid

Medicines and remedies


The entire medical fields have medication for the problem of bed wetting. The most effective is the Homeopathy which does not have side effects. Yoga also has the curing power but to practice with perfection is must.

1. Belladonna– this is effective in the bed wetting to the patient who usually wet bed after midnight towards morning. If the patient has restless sleep and is moaning and screaming in sleep this is a perfect medicine.
2. Causticum– This is for the person who is wetting bed in the first half of the night.
3. Equisetum– This is for the person who has irritation in bladder and goes to the washroom frequently in the daytime and night.
4. Sepia– This also recommended for the children who wet the bed in the first half of the night.
5. Sulfur– This is recommended for the children who eat more sweet and spices and wet bed mostly in the second half of the night.
Sarcodes– It is believed to coax urinary system.

Some of the asanas are quiet helpful in eradicating the problem of Nocturnal Enuresis or bedwetting.
Practicing some of the sitting and standing asanas can help to cure bedwetting and yoga in fact is a popular bed wetting remedy. Some of the popular asana include:

3. Bhadrasana (Gracious Pose)
4. Chakrasana (Wheel Pose)
5. Garudasana (Eagle Pose)
6. Gomukhasana (Cow face Pose)
7. Matsyasana (Fish Pose)

Retention control training or practice to delay urination by few minutes can be a major exercise to help the kid to control the pressure. Time of retention in this exercise should be increase gradually without putting pressure on the kid. This would help the child to develop control over the bladder muscles and also increase bladder capacity.

Allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine suggests two drugs – Imipramine (Tofranil) and Desmopressin acetate (DDAVP). The effectiveness of these medicines is very low. The feasibility of cure is from 10 to 60% where as the relapse rate is very high up to 80%.
These drugs can cause endocrine imbalances leading to side effects like headache, runny nose, nasal stuffiness, nosebleeds, nervousness, anxiety, constipation, and personality changes.
The other drugs being used are Oxybutynin (Ditropan) and Hyoscyamine (Levsin). These drugs reduce the contraction of the bladder and reduce the day-time urgency for urination. The side-effects are such as dry mouth, drowsiness, flushing, heat sensitivity, and constipation.
In some cases, the physician may recommend psychotherapy or surgical intervention.

Home remedies

• Take half liter of milk and boil it with dry-dates till it remains only to the quantity of 1/3. Make him/her consume it daily till the problem is over. This provides power to the bladder and the child develops the power to control the bladder.
• Before going to sleep rub the little finger of the child.

How to prevent bedwetting

• Make it a habit for your child to use the washroom before going to bed finally.
• Just avoid more of water intake after 6 pm.
• Announce reward on not wetting the bed.
• Ask your child to clean the bed if they wet it, but not as a punishment.
