The festival of Holi is observed on the last full moon of the lunar month. According to this purnimanta reckoning, Phalguna purnima was the last day of the year and the new year heralding the Vasanta-ritu (with spring starting from next day). Thus the full moon festival of Holika gradually became a festival of merrymaking, announcing the commencement of the spring season.
One day before the main Holi, it is called chhoti holi or Holika Dahan. On this day, in several states of India, specially in the north, effigies of Holika are burnt in the huge bonfires that are lit to mark the victory of good over evil.
Holi is also called the festival of color everywhere as this is celebrated with colors. It has different names at different places such as it is called Dulandi in Haryana, Rangpanchami in Maharashtra, locals of Maharashtra also know holi as Shimga or Shimgo. It is called Dol Purnima or Basant Utsav in West Bengal as this is celebrated in Spring season, In barsana it is called Lathmaar holi, in Punjab it is called Holi Mohalla, in Tamilnadu it is called Kaman Pandigai, Kamavilas and Kama-Dahanam, in Bihar it is known as Phagwa.
