Things to consider before selecting a coaching institute for NEET

Ever since NEET was made mandatory, there has been a flurry of coaching centres, popping across cities, and all making tall claims. Sifting, through all the coaching institutes, to select one that delivers what it promises, can be a Herculean task. How do you pick the best from the chaff?

What aspirants need to understand is that not all coaching institutions are the same. NEET coaching centres are not at par with each other; some are better than the others, in all respects. Hence it becomes imperative to take certain aspects into account before enrolling into a coaching institute for NEET. In this article, we walk you through key factors that you must review before choosing a coaching institute for NEET.

Credentials matter

Meet former and current students and ask them pointed questions about the coaching process. Is the study material good enough? Do they have regular tests and feedback sessions? How good is the faculty? Are teachers of all three subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) good in their respective disciplines and are they, capable teachers? Are students given individual attention? Are there enough practice/mock tests? Is the preparation thorough?

Nothing can be more authentic than actual feedback. Do not get fooled and taken up by newspaper advertisements and flyers; get information from real students. Many coaching institutions publish false information through publications to attract vulnerable candidates. Do not fall for that trap.

Infrastructure

Inspect the facility before enrolling your child. The coaching centre should not be crammed and stuffy, with tightly packed seats and no room to move. The facility must have separate washrooms for boys and girls.

Fans and comfortable seating are desirable because children remain at the coaching centres for long durations. Therefore, comfort and conveniences must be given paramount importance to ensure a stress-free learning environment.

The study centre must also be in a building that follows safety norms. Accidents can happen anywhere – let's not forget the recent fire incident in Gujarat and the tragic turn of events.

Consider the distance the child will have to travel each day. Keep in mind that traveling can be mentally and physically exhausting. A child who is going to travel a long distance, each day, might not be able to concentrate on studies because of the physical and mental stress.

Faculty

The faculty at the coaching centre plays an important role and having well-trained and experienced teachers can make a difference in the way the child understands concepts. The academic staff at the NEET coaching centres must be qualified and have a thorough knowledge of the subject they teach.

The faculty at successful coaching institutes have faculty who is well-versed with the test pattern and topics that are the most important. They provide students' hints and tips and smart practices that can help to crack the paper quickly and accurately. Most importantly, they infuse confidence in students.

Success rate

It is possible to determine the excellence of an institution by the number of students who secure good ranks in NEET. Check the success rate of the institution – how many students from the coaching centre ranked as All India toppers? How many students were state or city toppers? How many students who received NEET coaching at the institute secured admission in top medical colleges in the country. These numbers are crucial data and provide an actual picture of how good the institution is. You can decide on a coaching institute based on this information.

Number of classes

We can broadly classify entrance coaching centers in Kerala that offer NEET coaching into four types – the first type conducts classes after school. These are usually held over the weekend and on holidays. The coaching is extensive, starting in the morning and ending late in the evening. The second type conducts classes on weekdays, with 3-4-hour sessions.

Coaching institutes that offer an integrated program focus on regular classes in tune with the Education Board's syllabus as well as specialized NEET coaching. This type of school admits both day scholars and boarders.

The fourth type of NEET coaching is for students who drop a year to prepare for the competitive examination. The focus is only on NEET coaching. Pick an institution that gives you the most convenience in terms of time.

Tuition fees

The tuition fee is an essential factor in deciding how to choose a coaching institute for NEET. Several coaching institutions conduct scholarships tests and provide fee rebate and concessions to deserving and meritorious students. The scholarship offered can be a substantial amount.

The tuition fees should commensurate the quality of coaching provided. The faculty, the study material, the infrastructure, etc., must be top-class. Make comparisons before you decide on a coaching centre, to ensure that you get the best price for your money.

Division of batches

Another aspect to consider, while deciding on a NEET coaching centre is the basis on which student batches are determined. Is the teaching pace the same for all batches, or are students segregated based on their learning capacity? Do students who find it difficult to cope with the tough syllabus given extra attention? Are there special classes for them? Do students receive motivational lectures and guidance on how to improve performance?

Consider all these factors before, so that can help you how to choose a coaching institute for NEET. A proper analysis makes the selection easier.

What I sincerely feel that there need not be separate coaching sought for the NEET as there are ample scope and chances to learn from the class room lecture and also the special classes being conducted by the corporate colleges. My daughter never gone for the coaching center for taking NEET studies. She was attentive in the class lectures and used to attend special classes convened in her own college and every week there used to be full fledged test on the lines of original NEET exam with time management thought and that has benefited each candidate in long run as they managed the time and yet answered almost all questions with elan and got very good ranking in the weekly tests. Thus the overall knowledge of the student is thoroughly groomed for the final show down during the NEET exam.
